The great diversity of fishes characteristic of the northern Gulf of California is due to its high productivity, diversity of habitats and extreme environmental conditions (temperate in winter and subtropical in summer). These conditions contribute to the high endemism and richness of fish in this zone. This region is also an important reproductions site for at least six endemic fish species, including totoaba and Gulf corvina, as well as another 22 commercial species.
